Extremely Corrosion-Resistant and Economical
Long-Term Corrosion Protection for Small Components
Zinc-Nickel for Economical Drum Goods
The galvanically deposited zinc-nickel alloy with a nickel content of 12 to 15 percent offers high long-term corrosion protection, even under high temperature loads.
Typical application areas are the engine compartment as well as chassis and underbody areas in automotive engineering and offshore applications. Thermally loaded parts withstand the neutral salt spray test for more than 1,000 hours against the onset of base metal corrosion.
The zinc-nickel drum coating is suitable for components with an individual weight of up to approximately 100–120 grams. It is a particularly economical process for smaller components that are not in direct view.
Holder offers both transparent and black passivations. Selected TOPCOATS can further increase corrosion resistance and resistance to chemical substances.

What is zinc-nickel drum coating?
In drum coating, smaller components are electroplated together with a zinc-nickel alloy in a rotating drum. The process combines high long-term corrosion protection with the economical processing of larger quantities.
Which components are suitable for the zinc-nickel drum process?
The process is suitable for smaller components made of steel or cast iron with an individual weight of up to approximately 100–120 grams. It is particularly economical for parts that will not later be used in direct view.
What advantages does zinc-nickel offer as drum goods?
Drum coating is an economical process for larger quantities of small components. It offers high long-term corrosion protection, enhanced temperature resistance, good adhesion of the passivation layers, and various post-treatment options.
What corrosion resistance does zinc-nickel drum coating achieve?
In the neutral salt spray test according to DIN EN ISO 9227, 360 hours without white rust and 720 hours without red rust are achieved. Thermally loaded zinc-nickel components can withstand more than 1,000 hours against the onset of base metal corrosion.
Are transparent and black passivations available?
Yes. Zinc-nickel drum goods can be passivated in transparent or black. Thin-film and thick-film passivations are available for both variants.
What additional post-treatments are available?
Optionally, sealing with or without slip additives, TOPCOATS, lubricant treatment, preservation of uncoated internal areas, and heat treatment for hydrogen de-embrittlement are possible.
How do TOPCOATS improve the drum coating?
Selected TOPCOATS can further increase the corrosion resistance and resistance to chemical substances of the zinc-nickel surface. The selection depends on the component’s later use and the required friction values.
Are the passivations used chromium(VI)-free?
Yes. Holder offers chromium(VI)-free passivations from the Novatec 300 series as well as chromium(VI)-free combined coatings such as TRICOAT black and TRICOAT silver.
What products are used for zinc-nickel drum goods?
Depending on technical requirements, products such as ZinKlad 1000, ZinKlad 1000 B, Gleitmo 605, and Torque’n Tension are used, among others. A corresponding certification is available for ZinKlad 1000 and ZinKlad 1000 B.
Which standards apply to zinc-nickel drum goods?
For zinc-nickel, VW / Audi TL 244 (TL 13750), BMW GS 90010 ZNNI SI, DBL 8451, DBL 8466, Ford WX 100, Porsche PN 11011, and DIN 50979 are relevant, among others. Further customer-specific requirements can be coordinated on a project basis.
